Precautions and Notices

The houses, garages, and businesses that burned had many chemicals besides asbestos, and are invisible to the naked eye. The Pasadena Public Health Dept. states “Debris and ash may include lead, asbestos, arsenic, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxins or other hazardous materials.” This ash has already impacted our reservoirs, which made our tap water too dangerous to drink, and now blankets our yards and streets.

Water-Pasadena
Most areas of PWP water has been declared safe, but please follow these guidelines:

Upon return, what steps should I take concerning my water service?

1. Check if you are in the affected area under the “do not drink” alert at: https://pwp.cityofpasadena.net/water-notice-faq/.

2. Where possible, visually inspect your plumbing fixtures for signs of fire-related damage. If damage is identified, it is recommended to repair as soon as possible.

3. Before use, it is recommended to flush your water system in the following order: outside hose bib, toilet, bath tub, and then all other faucets. Each flushing event should be about 5 minutes or until the water becomes clear.

General Tips

Document Damage Thoroughly:
Take photos and videos before cleaning for insurance claims.

Don’t Rush Cleanup:
Waiting for official debris removal programs can ensure proper handling of toxic materials.

Stay Hydrated and Rested:
Recovery is a marathon, not a sprint.
