How To Help

Volunteer Organizations

If you’re looking to help, below are some of the organizations and funds that are providing critical support at this time.

I lost my home  and this also happens to be my day job to support folks to find trusted philanthropic giving opportunities. Let me know if I can be of assistance. —Kelly King

The Pasadena Boys and Girls Club opened right away to provide drop-in care for children. Schools are closed, and I don’t assume we’ll be able to open safely for some time in our community. This is a critical resource. We often forget that some of the nonprofits that serve students and families every day are the first to set up in at times like this and need our support too.

The Pasadena Educational Foundation in collaboration with Pasadena Unified has reactivated its pased.org/responsefund. Contributions will help address immediate needs and ensure resources reach our schools and families as they navigate this crisis.

Like my own children, we expect that a huge share, if not the majority, of the students who attend the schools in our neighborhood to have lost their home. We’re going to continue to look for ways to support these young people and educators.

The Foundation for the Los Angeles Community Colleges, which I lead, has set up a fund to support community college students and educators in LA.

The Pasadena Community Foundation has  opened the Eaton Canyon Fire Relief and Recovery Fund to support immediate and longer term needs.

DONATIONS:
Pasadena Community Foundation Launches Fire Relief Fund with $100,000, Will Collect Donations. Long-time established local nonprofit establishes emergency fund to support immediate and long-term recovery from Eaton Canyon blaze. The Pasadena Community Foundation (PCF) announced it has established an emergency response fund to assist those affected by the Eaton Canyon fire.

The Foundation announced the creation of the “Eaton Canyon Fire Relief and Recovery Fund” and has seeded it with an initial $100,000 to address community needs. “We have all been glued to the news watching the devastation of the Eaton Canyon fire to our neighbors. My heart goes out to all who have been impacted by this disaster,” said Jennifer DeVoll, President and CEO of the Foundation.

The fund “will provide an opportunity for those who want to support immediate and longer term needs,” according to the foundation’s announcement. PCF emphasized that “100% of contributions will provide essential relief.”

The Foundation, which serves as “a vital resource for the greater Pasadena area in California,” has operated since 1953. It has “evolved into a nonprofit public benefit corporation dedicated to improving the lives of people in the Pasadena community, both now and for future generations.”
Community members interested in supporting the relief efforts can make donations through the Foundation’s online portal at:

FOR FIVE ACRES

We know many of our Five Acres friends and family have been impacted by the fires and are heartened by the many stories we have heard of people helping others even while they have been displaced. While we may be experiencing grief of loss, we are also staying strong with you to ensure our community’s needs are met. We continue to fulfill the operational needs to keep the children in our care safe and the staff available to support families in need.

Currently, our Ketch Site in Altadena where our residential children are based remains in evacuation status; however, the fires have not touched our historical buildings, and we only have some wind damage that can be repaired. We have extended the stay downtown for our children and teams in our Residential Program. Their safety remains our number one priority.

There is some comfort seeing in the midst of all this devastation that kids will be kids, and keeping them safe and occupied is our top job. The children are enjoying the hotel amenities as all children would if they remained in one space. They are learning about weightlifting and using the treadmills. They are enjoying the morning buffets and lounging in the lobby area. Movies in their rooms are fun, too.

Our Five Acres family have asked how they can support us during this time.

• Costs to support the relocation of our foster children in residential care, who were impacted by the Eaton Fire, to stay safe—$200 per child per night for relocation costs

• We don’t know how long this relocation will continue – any support is appreciated.

Due to the wildfires, we are currently not able to accept gift in-kind donations at our Ketch Site in Altadena or Fair Oaks office. Anyone wishing to make future gift in-kind donations deliveries are asked to reach out to Athena Asklipiadis at aasklipiadis@5acres.org.

Disaster Unemployment Assistance

EDD helps people and businesses in California who have been affected by disasters.

If you lost your job or can’t work because of a disaster, you may qualify for unemploymentdisability, or Paid Family Leave benefits.

If the president of the United States declares a disaster, Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) may also be available for workers and self-employed people who do not qualify for regular unemployment benefits.

For information on current disasters, visit EDD Disaster-Related Services.

For anyone who has lost their house or apartment, we ask that you do not discard your old keys. We are establishing drop sites to collect them, and turn those many, many keys into a tribute to the devastated communities. We feel this will be a powerful visual statement that we hope will help people move forward.

Musicians

f you lost musical instruments in the Eaton Canyon fire like I did, we’re working on getting them back to you.

Please start to compile your list of beloved instruments and gathering any photos you have.

We’re working on a website that will act like a wedding registry for your lost items. Donors will view your registry and replace them from their own collections of instruments or can purchase new ones for you.

Launch event to receive your instruments will be happening in Feb.

Help is on the way.
